最近、英語のお勉強に英語のイソップ物語を読んでいましたら、内容が面白いものがあったので紹介します。

タイトルは、The Old man and Death.

文庫本で、本のタイトルはAesop's Fables .

出版元は講談社イングリッシュライブラリー。

著者はラルフ・マッカーシー。

お話もいいんですが、挿絵もまた味があってよろしいんですよ。

飯野和好さんという方が描いています。

アップしている画像がその挿絵を模写したもの。

本の挿絵は、老人と薪の線描だけです。

周りの風景と色塗りは私が勝手に描きました。

The Old Man and Death

One day a very old man was gathering sticks in the forest. This old man had
worked hard all his life and had nothing to show for it but swollen, aching joints and
a crooked back. He was hobbling painfully along with his bundle of sticks on his
shouder when he suddenly felt that he couln't go on any more. Life just didn't seem worth living. He threw his bundle on the ground, raised his hands to Heaven, and
cried, "Death! Give me Death!"
The words were no sooner out of his mouth than Death appeared before him in
a long black robe. "You called?" he said. "And what can I do for you, sir?"
"Er, well, I..." the old man stammered. "I was just wondering if you could help me
get this bundle of sticks back up on my shoulder."
